What is a non-degree credential anyway?

In the very near future I will give an invited talk with influential experts on non-degree credentials. It’s an honor; perhaps I am prouder of it than anyone I know.

Two years ago I joined Lumina Foundation with a focus to best understand credentials earned after high school that aren’t degrees - hence the term non-degree credential - and all I can say is that it is a lot to take in. Countless conversations with experts have given me a privileged perspective on an exciting and evolving space.

In an effort to democratize the privilege of my position through the empowerment of others, I offer a quick overview. 

What are Nondegree credentials?
Badges (digital), certifications (governmental), certificates (academic, achievement, competency criterion-referenced, participation, performance, occupational/vocational), course completion certificates (online, in-person), diplomas, industry certifications, licenses, and micro-credentials

Who awards them?
Postsecondary institutions, nonprofit organizations, community-based organizations, labor unions, companies, governmental entities (Federal, state, and local), training providers, and K-12 schools among others.

Where do they – the data – “live”?
Surveys (ex. NTEWS), Administrative collections (Ex. PIRL), Voluntary collections (ex. Credential Engine), Proprietary tools (Ex. Credly)

When are they earned?
While in class, during work, at home, in a building (ex. Library), and most anywhere (ex. Massively Open Online Course)

Why do they exist?
As way to acknowledge learning.

How are they earned?
While requirements vary from attendance to the completion a program of study that requires demonstration of acquired knowledge, skill and abilities

The results of the conversation may well firmly define a sizable chunk of a dynamic space. I am not alone to hope that, in the months of reflection and decisions to come after the discussion, it does. 

Only then can we begin to use a common language to catalyze movement requisite to align silos in service of #learners and #employers which have the power to ultimately invigorate #communities of all shapes and sizes.
